Episode 263: The Talisman Effect

Blurb: This week the word is Expansion. The nerds discuss the challenges of creating expansions for games, including issues like bloat, keeping current with changing source material, and needing to have something cool & new for the expansion vs. wishing for that cool new feature to be part of the core game. Some specific games they discuss (in addition to their own) are Talisman, The Lord of the Rings board game, Over-the-Edge’s Cut-Ups system, Cosmic Encounter, and even Monopoly. Then Andy discusses the process of developing two new expansions for the Star Trek Fluxx series of games, and Keith drops the code word “pomegranate.” Next they discuss the next difficult-to-read entry in their book club, which is Dictionary of the Khazars, by Milorad Pavic. This week the word is Finale. First the nerds discuss notable finales, cliff-hangers, final episodes that had to serve as finales, good endings, bad endings, unexpected endings, and more. Next, they check in with work stuff, then they discuss the final chapter of the book they’ve been reading for months, S. Lastly, they discuss the last episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the first few episodes of Debris.

Episode 261: Legendary Mustaches

This week the word is Palimpsest. After first discussing what the word even means, the nerds discuss a few examples of palimpsests, the most notable of which being the book they’ve been reading, S. aka Ship of Theseus. Other topics include Tig Notaro, recent life issues including vaccinations, online conventions, Lower Decks, Debris, Solar Opposites, TikTok videos, Raised by Wolves, Kong vs. Godzilla, For All Mankind, favorite RPG moments, and Keith’s D&D campaign. Then they discuss chapter 9 of S., and a paragraph that reminded Andy of an old card game called Dark Cults. Lastly, they discuss episode 5 of Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
